WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

A person who is a member of a private nonprofit organization having a statewide membership of 7,500 or more is eligible. CCA will confirm membership of all applicants.

WHAT ARE THE TITLE AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS?

Texas title and registration must be in the applicant’s (member’s) name. If an application for title has been filed in the applicant’s name, attach a copy of the title application receipt. Joint ownership between the applicant and spouse is permissible.  If the vehicle is leased, attach a copy of the lease agreement.

WHAT TYPES OF VEHICLES MAY DISPLAY THE PLATES?

Private Nonprofit Organization License Plates may be displayed on either a passenger car or light commercial vehicle having a manufacturer’s rated carrying capacity of one ton or less. At this time, you will not be able to purchase a Redfish Plate for your boat trailer.

HOW ARE THE PLATES OBTAINED?

The Department of Transportation will mail you a notice when the plates have been shipped to your local county tax office.

To obtain the special plates, you must surrender your vehicle’s current license plates and window sticker to the County Tax Assessor-Collector, and submit proof of current financial responsibility (liability insurance). The regular vehicle registration fee must be paid for the period during which the special plates are valid.

If your vehicle is currently registered, the expiration date will be adjusted to correspond with the expiration of the special plates. Additional fees will be collected or credit will be issued as necessary to make this adjustment.

PERSONALIZED LICENSE PLATES

A personalized Redfish plate costs an additional $40 which must be sent to the state. Please make out a separate check payable to TxDOT  for the personalized option. Personalized license plate choices may consist of five (5) letters and/or numbers or less providing the choice has not already been issued and can be approved. Choices should be shown exactly as you wish them to appear on the license plates. Choices with alterations or erasures will not be considered.  Each square of a choice block may be used to represent one (1) character, period, dash, or space. A silhouette of Texas takes up two spaces.  Small letters cannot be used.

Call the special plates division at (512) 374-5010, option 4 for specific questions regarding your personalized plate choices. If you send in three choices that cannot be used, your application and money will be returned.
